Five ways to know you are ready to make a podcast

Someone at some point said you should start a podcast. Whether it was your CEO, a volunteer, or an intern who had the idea of creating great, engaging content has crossed your mind. How do you even begin, what do you need, are you even prepared to make a podcast? Here are five ways to know you are ready to start a podcast.

The first way is you have passed the “intern or brainstorm session said it was a good idea” stage.

Creating a podcast for whatever reason is not something you just do. It’s a commitment to your brand and to your potential audience. Connecting with potential customers, association members, or the general public gives you a gateway into their daily lives. The first step is to figure out why you want to create a podcast.

You see podcasting as possible extra income.

Some groups may call is non-dues revenue, but you see podcasting as a way to make money and you have a plan. Podcasting can generate income directly through advertising or indirectly with partnerships, sponsorships, and increased sales.

You have an idea for the overall type of podcast you want to produce.

Your podcast can be an interview, panel discussion, or edited news magazine. The style and form your podcast will take will directly impact the number of people involved and their level of talent.

Whether it's your executive team talking about visions and strategies for your brand or a rotating interview that showcases the successes and challenges your members are facing...the possibilities are endless.

Identify who on your team will be involved.

This matters even more if you are hiring out the podcast producing. Your company’s representative needs to know your organization and the driving force intimately. Those on your team who will help connect the company and producers will communicate the values and knowledge for the collective.

Many times you will discover that your team doesn't have the right roles. To get a podcast off the ground or perhaps even help with the ongoing production, you can work with a proven broadcasting group like AVNation to start up your new membership association or executive podcast.

Create a Budget

The podcast budget will change based on how much your organization will produce internally and how much will be off-loaded to another company. If your group does not have audio or video production expertise, this is where contracting with a company who does have years of experience will pay dividends. Leave the production and coordinating to experts in their field and you can then become the subject matter experts for your audience.

Getting into podcasting is a great medium. Podcasting allows you to talk with your audience, fan base, members, and clients. Creating a new podcast from scratch is time-consuming but worth the investment if you know what you are striving for in the end and have a plan. Write it out, edit and make adjustments, and then head out and start creating.
